Some considerations on the structural rehabilitation of the rationalist buildings in Italy The Balilla House in Forlì

We focus here on the relationship between the active preservation of the rationalist buildings in Italy in the first half of the XX century and the need of their adaptation to the current structural standards. Since most of these buildings are protected by the national law, it is interesting to understand the design outcomes in case of adaptation to the seismic standards or, on the contrary, in case of simple structural improvement, according to less restrictive regulations.
A case study is introduced, the Casa del Balilla in Forlì, built in the years 1933-35. Proceeding with the structural adaptation has brought some technical difficulties; the design solutions are investigated through a numerical analysis, backing up the information available in the construction documents.
