The earthquakes and the subsequent “revolutions” in regulations about structural analysis, which involved Italy in the last decade, allowed a renewed sensitivity to the maintenance and enhancement of common buildings. For several years, the scientific community was wondering about how to preserve not only the safety of people who live there, but also the social and administrative functions which is carried out inside historical city centers.
From this point of view, this paper aims to show how an adequate knowledge of constructive techniques and building transformations can be the beginning of a process aimed at the development of planning guidelines for the conservation of historical towns from seismic risk.
