In this contribution Arnaldo Pomodoro outlines the story of his plan for new cemetery in Urbino (1973). It was an example of a “dug cemetery” which applied the typical poetry of this famous artist to the landscape and to the soil by means of paths and tombs excavated as a furrow under the ground level. The following text traces the reasons for the missed realization of this work and mentions the protagonists of the debate that this plan animated in Italy between 1977 and 1980.
